“A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh”. Proverbs 14:30

Tranquility is defined as the quality or state of being tranquil; calm

Tranquility is being able to keep our emotions under control. This is why the bible tells us over and over to be self-controlled. It is part of the fruit of the Spirit. Therefore, it is a good thing to obtain.

When our lives are filled with fears, anxieties, anger, changing circumstance, etc this fills us with the feeling of ‘restlessness’ and we cannot control ourselves. This feeling of restlessness is the opposite of tranquility.

Why are we so restless and not experiencing tranquility in our lives?

I believe the answer is simple. In order to have tranquility we need to have humility. We cannot get a tranquil heart unless we become humble before God. Humility is needed in all of our lives but our pride stops us from receiving it. When we are being prideful we feel that “nothing can be controlled” and thus we never experience tranquility in our hearts. However, when we learn to control ourselves by coming to God with our needs, our anxieties, our cares and concerns, then this is where we learn the beauty of humility.

So, how do we get a tranquil heart?

We need to CULTIVATE it!

We cultivate a tranquil heart by reading and spending time in God’s word daily.

We cultivate a tranquil heart by making the time to pray to God but also wait for His response to us.

We cultivate a tranquil heart by trusting God and believe that He has our best interest at heart.

Proverbs 14:33 says that “wisdom soothes the heart of the one with living -understanding.” We get this wisdom from God alone. Prov.2:6 says that “for the Lord grants wisdom”.
We need God to help us and to ‘anchor’ us. This ‘anchoring’ allows us to be tranquil in our hearts every single day of our lives, for it gives us life!
