It’s a sure sign I’m getting old when I begin to reminisce on the old hymns!
But these hymns were written by men and women inspired by God in their season, and I believe God continues to use these words to encourage us today, and remind us of His Care for us.
The hymn I am referring to is Count Your Blessings.
It says When you are discouraged thinking all is lost- Count your blessings.
The word count is very significant because as we name our blessings one by one what happens? We are “surprised” by what The Lord has done. It is an exercise in gratitude.
Sometimes our “ list” can be an eye- opener, often very materialistic.
If we lived in a war- torn country, our list would be very different, counting blessings such as
-Being thankful to be alive another day.
-That our children are alive and healthy.
-That we have food to eat and a bed to sleep in.
I’m sure during this Covid-19 season we have become thankful for simple blessings, and that we are alive and not sick.
The blessings we really need to count though, are our spiritual blessings.
-Like God’s unconditional love for us His Grace, His Forgiveness.
Spiritual Blessings are what we hunger for and seek after.
God’s Blessings make us rich.
“The Blessing of the Lord makes one rich, and He adds no sorrow with it”.( Prov.10.22)
Paul says in Ephesians 1 v.3.
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ”.
God’s Blessing often comes with a condition and a choice.( Deut.11:26).
“Behold I set before you today a blessing and a curse.
The blessing if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and the curse if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God”.
A Blessing if we obey His Commandments.
We will be spiritually rich and happy.
We will be cursed if we don’t.
Make a list of your blessings today and see if has changed from your pre- Covid-19 one.
