“Our Humble Beginnings: VCC how it all began” by Mabel Patterson

This is the story of how VCC came about as per our own late special friend and one of the first members of our church, Mabel Patterson. “The Apostolic Church in Montreal really started when two men, Mr. William Evans and Mr. Nally, along with Mrs. Evans and her brother emigrated from Wales to Montreal to work at the Royal Victoria Hospital. They held services in their own home which Norma’s father and Mabel’s mother attended. In the meantime, a group of Pentecostal Christians, formerly members of the Drummond Street Church, were without a pastor, so Willie Evans suggested that the Apostolic Church, with headquarters in Toronto, could supply a…

    Equality

There is something powerful about the word equality. The definition of equality is “the state of being equal”. Equal is defined as being the same in value, worth, degree, rights, and opportunities. When studying math we are taught that one side of the equation should equal the other side of the equation. If they do not equal each other, then they are not balanced and are not right. We need to go back and take a look at the equation and fix what is wrong in order to make it right. I know that comparing math formulas to human lives is not the best illustration; however I believe that we…

    What are you facing today?

I have been reflecting on life today and thinking about all the ways we can feel when facing different life circumstances. Who has not faced this at some point in time in life: -a broken heart (state of extreme grief and sorrow). -a crushed spirit (“to have life squeezed out of you”. Not literally, but mentally. By circumstances, making you very sad, depressed). -being faced with many afflictions (things that cause persistent pain, distress, physical and psychological sufferings, misery). But, God promises to be near; to save; and to deliver us! We see His promises in Psalm 34:18-19, where it declares that, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and…

    Living Simply.

Life. Simple. Simply living. Living Simple. Simplicity. True life. Isaiah 26:3 “You will keep in perfect peace, those whose minds are steadfast (fixed on you), because they trust in you.” Living simply. It is not about being a “minimalist” but it’s about living free from the worldly love. In order to accomplish this, it involves a complete mind shift. This means that our minds have to completely change what it is set upon. What is your mind set upon? In the book of Romans it tells us exactly what are minds are set upon, take a look at these powerful words: Romans 8:5-6 “Those who live according to the flesh…

    Tranquility

“A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh”. Proverbs 14:30 Tranquility is defined as the quality or state of being tranquil; calm Tranquility is being able to keep our emotions under control. This is why the bible tells us over and over to be self-controlled. It is part of the fruit of the Spirit. Therefore, it is a good thing to obtain. When our lives are filled with fears, anxieties, anger, changing circumstance, etc this fills us with the feeling of ‘restlessness’ and we cannot control ourselves. This feeling of restlessness is the opposite of tranquility. Why are we so restless and not experiencing tranquility in our lives? I believe…

    Be Careful Who You Follow

Have you ever played “Follow the Leader/ CopyCat Game”? Trying to mimic the leader by copying their actions and watching others do the same can be hilarious. However, following the wrong person can be quite detrimental to one’s being. I have been reading Jeremiah lately and picturing Israel treating God so badly and disrespectfully was bad enough, but what really stood out to me was that others were watching how Israel treated God. The other people watching were the tribe of Judah. Judah was watching how Israel treated God very closely. We can see this in Jeremiah 3:7 where God says “I thought, ‘After she (Israel) has done this, she…
